I felt it was just an effect for the old blues guys since the only reverb type I knew was spring reverb. At the time I was all about distortion so I could play punk and nu-metal. Remember 90's nu-metal? Years later I really got into shoegazey and post-rock type of music and started playing more in church. There you saw a shift from 90's keys-heavy songs to more electric guitar-based music with the use of certain effects.
