A simple method for checking the chainline on your bicycle. This process uses a straight edge against your chainring that runs past your freewheel or cog to determine how far out or in your chainline is. If your freewheel or cog needs to move away from the center, you may use shims to push it out. These shims go in between your hub and your freewheel/cog. If your freewheel or cog needs to move towards the center, you may shim out your chainring. Chainring shims go between your chainring and your crank arm. If you are measuring your chainline to purchase a bottom bracket, don't forget that your bottom bracket extends on both sides of your bike. Therefore, to move your chainring in by 1.5mm, you'll need to purchase a bottom bracket that is 3mm smaller than the one you had on the bike when you checked it.
