On May 5, 1992, Gang Starr released its third studio album, Daily Operation. On the follow-up to the duo's massively successful sophomore album, Step In The Arena, DJ Premier and Guru were in their prime with tracks like “Take it Personal,” "B.Y.S." and “Ex-Girl to The Next Girl.” In 1998, The Source magazine selected Daily Operation as one of the 100 Best Hip Hop Albums. Daily Operation featured some of Premier’s most innovative production techniques. In an interview with VIBE, Premier said that the album gave him more confidence as a DJ. "Before this album, I was getting a few calls from other artists to work with me. KRS-One reached out, but I was like, 'Nah, I’m not ready yet,'" he said. "I thought Kris was too large of an icon for me to even think that I could pull off an album with him. I was too nervous. But when he reached out after Daily Operation I said, 'Ok, I’ll do it.' I did so many songs with other artists after that album." In 1992, Premier also created remixes for acts like Too $hort and Compton’s Most Wanted. The album also included the debut of Gang Starr foundation member Jeru the Damaja on “I’m the Man.” A year later, Jeru's debut single “Come Clean,” also produced by Premier, would become a hip hop classic. Gang Starr continued to elaborate upon the sound of Daily Operation for another decade. And on its 25th anniversary, it still holds up as one of hip hop's certified classics.
