This video is part of a series that focuses on generative modular ambient. In these videos I'll be using my Eurorack modular system to create meditative patches that breathe and float. I am especially interested in generative processes, allowing the modular system to "play itself" and create slowly evolving textures that have no beginning and no end. Patch Notes: I bought an Oxi One sequencer this week and it has already changed my life. Most of the systematic sequencing I've done up to this point involves the Hermod, but it is really hard to use the Hermod as a performance tool. You can program notes and gates in there in a methodical manner, but the process of doing so feels unnatural. Yes, you can plug a midi keyboard in there and record notes into the Hermod via the keyboard, but I always felt like I was doing "two things" at once, if that makes sense. It wasn't a fluid experience. The One, in contrast, is, well, "one thing." I can use it to improvise, to be whimsical, or to be very systematic. I can use it to lock in and record notes, edit them easily, and, more generally sequence pitch, gates, and various forms of modulation. Moreover, it has multiple options that make generative work fun, intuitive, and pleasing. And the One has a beautiful and responsive grid. I'm in heaven. This track uses two improvised sequences, each of which is controlling a separate oscillator in the Qu-Bit Chord (free poly mode). The One is set to randomize note probability and octave. The sounds are going directly to the mixer after some reverb, but one multed channel is going to the Arbhar where it is being sampled and played back in a granular manner. Those sounds are then feeding into the Nebulae where, again, elements are being recorded and played back (with a bit of stretch and at a higher octave). That specific channel is soaked in reverb. This particular piece involves starting with that deeper channel Nebulae drone, bringing in the Chord sequence, and then fading it out once again. #eurorack #modular #ambient
