Cab Calloway (December 25, 1907 – November 18, 1994) was an American jazz singer and big band leader. He was known for his eccentric way of singing and was also called the Hi-De-Ho man. He had his greatest successes in the thirties and forties. Well-known hits are 'Minnie the Moocher' and 'Lady with the fan'. Calloway was born in Rochester. At the age of eleven, he moved with his parents to West Baltimore. After having received music lessons in this city as a teenager, he continued his education at Frederick Douglass High School. The lessons were not so much focused on jazz, but Calloway later said that he had received all the necessary tools to achieve and maintain a career. In the thirties and forties he became very successful as a singer. He also made a career in animated films. Short animated films were often shown in American cinemas as a supporting act before the start of the main film. In the heyday of the advent of animated film (the 1930s), Calloway and his big band provided musical support for the popular animated films starring Betty Boop. His name can be found on the title role of many films in this series. In 1980, Calloway came back into the spotlight with his performance as Curtis in the musical film The Blues Brothers. In that film, he performed Minnie the Moocher. In April 2009, the American big band "Big Bad Voodoo Daddy" released a Cab Calloway tribute album titled How Big Can You Get?. In the movie Sing 2, the character Clay Calloway appears, it is known that this character is based on Cab Calloway. Welcome to the official North Sea Jazz Archive!
