Tissue respiration is the metabolic process by which living cells absorb oxygen and release carbon dioxide. It is also called internal respiration. Tissue respiration occurs at the cellular level and involves enzymatic reactions that produce ATP. It is the exchange of gases between the blood in systemic capillaries and tissue cells. There are two types of tissue respiration: aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration. Aerobic respiration uses glucose and oxygen while anaerobic respiration uses only glucose.
