In today’s fast-paced, tech-driven world, where children face a growing mental health crisis and diminishing opportunities for genuine, unstructured connection, a shift toward nature and freedom of choice in mental health approaches is urgently needed. Kate Beckwith, psychodynamic psychotherapist, MA, MBACP (Accred), and founder of the innovative practice, "Kate's Garden", redefines therapeutic engagement with children through a groundbreaking blend of incorporating access to nature, art, animals, play and freedom of choice. Kate joined us at the University of Essex to share her journey in founding her pioneering psychotherapy practice. Drawing from her own journey of overcoming adversity, and sharing compelling case studies of children profoundly impacted by her practice, Kate demonstrates how an unconfined setting fosters psychological safety, encourages authentic self-expression, and promotes resilience and confidence. Kate explains how the setting and methodology enhance therapeutic work, emphasizing the vital role of outdoor, unstructured play in supporting mental health and its broader impact on how we raise, educate, and design spaces for children. Kate argues for a shift in therapeutic practices that adapts to children’s evolving needs in a modern, technologically driven society. Her talk inspires therapists, educators, caregivers, and even town planners, to reimagine the way we think about, work with, and engage with children and young people. Championing a more holistic, dynamic process that emphasises connection, exploration, and agency. Kate is revolutionising psychotherapy for children and adolescents and advocating for a future where therapeutic spaces evolve beyond walls.
