“Si usted nunca ha ido a Loja, no conoce mi país.” “If you’ve never gone to Loja, you don’t know my country.” We’ve seen a whole lot of Ecuador, and we know the TRUTH of this song lyric! We embraced rural living when we moved our family to Ecuador, but wanted to be near a big city for errands and activities. Loja was the perfect choice! It’s small enough to be easily navigated, is known for its cultural events, is the music capital of Ecuador, has fantastic dining options and regional cuisine, and offers plenty of choices as far as medical providers, shopping, and recreation. Plus, its surroundings are probably the most beautiful of any Ecuadorian city. As much as we’re loving small town-living, being an expat is easier with a metropolitan area nearby, and we typically head to Loja a couple times a month.
