Original title: Žička Kartuzija The Žiče Carthusian monastery is the oldest charterhouse in central Europe. It was founded by the order in the 12th century as their 19th monastery, and was the first outside their home lands of France and Italy. It was the first in Central Europe and the first of four founded in Slovenia. In 1165 the founding charter was signed by Ottokar III, the Margrave of Styria. In the 14th and 15th century the charterhouse became a European cultural and political epicentre in this territory. Religious life in the valley died when the Žiče monastery was dissolved in 1782 by the royal decree of Emperor Joseph II. On the occasion of the monastery’s 850th anniversary it received the status of a monument of national importance.
