This class will focus on the COVID-19 pandemic as a unique lens to understand the intersection of science and society. The real process of science is often hidden from view – buried in the technical jargon of scientific journals – with only a few select bits elevated and buffed for public consumption. This year, we are all experiencing the process of science in real time in our everyday lives. Its immense power, messiness, starts and stumbles, evolution of understanding, and deep humanity are on full display for all to see. What lessons should we be taking away from this jarring intersection of science and society? How can individuals make sense of the actual scientific understanding? What does our future with COVID-19 look like? Heidi Elmendorf, professor of biology, and a founding co-director of the Biology of Global Health major, will lead this class, providing insights into the pandemic from the perspective of an infectious disease biologist.
