As night falls in the African savanna, the sounds of the bush become louder and more ominous. The crickets, cicadas and katydids seem to be calling from everywhere. A pair of African wood owls are starting the night with a few hoots before they fly off looking for food. Distant hyenas wail and howl. A lone elephant is bathing in the river nearby while lions, leopards and other predators quietly prepare to go hunting. It's impossible not to feel a little apprehensive. Night is falling and you're surrounded by wilderness. You can barely see anything in the moonless night. The sky is blood red in the West. Every little sound is a potential danger, and there's no such thing as safety. Everything changes as soon as you light the campfire. Now there is light, warmth, and a feeling of shelter. Dangerous animals are kept at bay, almost magically. You can finally take a break from being alert all the time and admire the raw beauty of the savanna at night. Studies have shown that fire crackling (IRL or even videos and soundscapes) offers countless benefits. It can facilitate relaxation and even reduce blood pressure. It's not difficult to see why. A campfire evokes feelings of safety, reaching us through genes and over millennia. Fire has shaped human evolution, allowing us to survive weather and predators. It has allowed us to light the night and to cook otherwise inedible food. Even deeper than the direct benefits of controlling fire, a campfire is a social place. Night makes our imagination run wild, but the relative safety of the campfire allows us to explore potential dangers without being exposed to them. Conversation flows, and stories are shared around the fire. People find it easier to speak as everyone's attention is focused on the flames. Recorded at Kapamba bushcamp in South Luangwa National Park with Sound Devices Mixpre 3 ii and Sennheiser MKH8090 microphones. Shot with Sony A1 and Sony 50 f1.2 lens.
