In early 1942, nearly 96,000 German troops were surrounded near the Russian town of Demyansk. Encircled by seven Soviet armies in the frozen wilderness south of Leningrad, they faced starvation, disease, and the brutal cold of the Eastern Front. Among the trapped were the elite Waffen-SS Totenkopf Division and the Danish volunteers of Frikorps Danmark, thrown into the inferno to hold the line at any cost. For months, the men inside the Demyansk Pocket fought without relief—surviving on meagre Luftwaffe airlifts, fighting off endless Soviet assaults, and enduring temperatures that froze weapons to their hands. Against all odds, they held out, turning Demyansk into one of the most extraordinary sieges of the Second World War. This documentary explores the brutal conditions, the airlift that saved them, and the sacrifices of the foreign volunteers who fought alongside Germany in 1942. From the SS Totenkopf’s desperate defense to the final breakout ordered by Ernst Busch’s Sixteenth Army, this is the forgotten story of endurance, loyalty, and survival behind enemy lines. #history #documentary #ww2 #worldwar2 #education Pattreon & Instagram📱 / historyatwar / historyatwar Help Support Us: Your donations help improve our channel and enhance the quality of our historical content. ❤️ https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted... 🎵Music: 'Goliath' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au 'Shadows and Dust' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au 'Celestial' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au 'The Long Dark' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au 'Emergent' by Scott Buckley - released under CC-BY 4.0. www.scottbuckley.com.au Disclaimer: The opinions and comments expressed in the 'Comments' section do not reflect the views of HistoryAtWar.
