This video dispels many of the mysteries about Wilderness First Aid (WFA) training & CPR/AED Certification. Many scout leaders that are heading off to high adventure are required to take this training. This first aid training is recommended for scout leaders heading off to remote locations where rapid first aid transport is not readily available. Many councils have opportunities throughout the year for training at their scout camp. They are organizations that can also do the training outside of your counsel. It's recommended that you contact your council about this training and alternatives. This is defined as being an hour or more away from advanced care. WFA courses are intended for anyone planning a remote high adventure, from lay responders to medical professionals. High Adventure Base WFA Requirements – All four of the BSA high-adventure bases require at least one person per trek (two per trek at Philmont Scout Ranch) to be current in WFA. Why is WFA important? – WFA prepares participants to identify and address medical issues that can arise in the backcountry. • Substantial medical information. • Teach skills to respond to medical emergencies in the wild. • BSA-WFA training curriculum specifically for Scouts and Scouters. • Help them provide assessment and treatment miles from advanced care. • Recognize illnesses early and minimize the potential for injury. • In urban areas during hurricanes, floods, fires, or mass casualty events. Who needs WFA? – Youth (14 years old and up) and adult Scout leaders are encouraged to take a 16-hour WFA course based on the specific curriculum developed by the BSA. WFA Certification – BSA has identified the following providers as meeting the BSA’s requirements for WFA training: • American Red Cross • Emergency Care & Safety Institute • Some of the American Camp Association (ACA). - Please get in touch with your local BSA council for questions regarding a specific course or a list of approved ACA providers. WFA courses offered by other providers do not meet the BSA’s wilderness first aid requirements. If WFA is required for your adventure, you must obtain a certificate of successful completion. In addition, a current CPR/AED certificate is also needed. Many other councils that offer high-adventure programs are encouraged to require WFA training as part of their requirements. 📊 Poll (5/16/23): What is your training experience level in First Aid? 15% Medical Doctor, Practicing Nurse, Military Medic, or EMT. 3% Red Cross, or Emergency Care Instructor. 23% Wilderness First Aid & CPR/AED Certification. 53% First Aid Merit Badge with CPR training. 7% I don’t have any First Aid training. ⏱ Time Stamp & Video Jump List: 0:00 What is Wilderness First Aid 0:49 What is Wilderness First Aid 1:29 Is this Requiered 2:30 High-Adventure Bases Requirements 3:16 What will the Training Provide 4:48 Other uses for this Training 5:22 Can Youth Take Wilderness First Aid 5:58 Thank You 6:58 BSA Wilderness First Aid Courses 8:49 Council Crew or Contingent #scouterstan #scouts #scoutleader @ScouterStan © 2023 S Richards LLC
