Priest taking pictures at top of baldachin 4. Various of scaffolding covering baldachin 5. Bronze and gold columns after restoration work 6. Close of cherub 7. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Alberto Capitanucci, Engineer, Fabbrica of St. Peter's: "The technical difficulties were essentially the accessibility, that is, creating a structure capable of carrying us to every point of the canopy with reasonable ease, because then from the point of view of the techniques used, we only needed time, confirmation of the possibility of operating with ordinary techniques on bronze and gold. As I said, the woods have proven to be in excellent condition, which is the element that we all imagine to be the most delicate, so let's say that from a technical point of view it went much better than it could have done." 8. Various of restorer showing inscriptions at top of baldachin 9. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Alberto Capitanucci, Engineer, Fabbrica of St. Peter's: "From the worker's paper hat made with a newspaper - I mean from the 19th century just to say, I don't remember if it was - from the shopping list or the sole of a child's shoe, which explains the tradition, which lasted until I think of the 1950s, of using light children suspended on rope to go and clean the most difficult areas." 10. Various of columns 11. SOUNDBITE (Italian) Alberto Capitanucci, Engineer, Fabbrica of St. Peter's: "Gold obviously is the element, the light, because this - But contrary to what I said at the beginning, so that it will be only gold, as if everything were held on this golden thread of the first Rocco and on the branches of the laurel of the second part, in reality the leather effect that has been brought to light on the bronze will be the most interesting element of deep vibration." 12. Various of baldachin covered by scaffoldings in St. Peter's Basilica STORYLINE: The restoration of the monumental baldachin, or canopy, over the main altar of St. Peter’s Basilica has come to an end. The restoration and conservation project which started in February was the first comprehensive work on the 10-story tall baldachin in 250 years. The structure, which is positioned over the basilica’s main altar to provide a ceremonial covering for the tomb of St. Peter underneath, dates from the 1620s-1630s, when Pope Urban VIII commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to create a canopy for the apostles’ tomb. The baldachin is considered one of the most complicated multi-material art works of all time, with its marble, bronze, wood, gold, and iron. It eventually involved numerous other artists and craftsmen, including the master architect of the period, Francesco Borromini. It's due to be reopened to the public at the end of October, just a few months before the start of the Jubilee of 2025. From a technical point of view, the main difficulty was “creating a structure capable of carrying (workers) to every point of the canopy with reasonable ease,” said engineer Alberto Capitanucci, from the Fabbrica of St. Peter’s, the office dedicated to maintaining the Basilica. “The woods have proven to be in excellent condition, which is the element that we all imagine to be the most delicate, so let's say that from a technical point of view it went much better than it could have done,” he explained.
