Try this magic spinning pen science trick at home! You’ll need: 4 ring magnets, 3 dowels, modeling clay, cardboard, pen, hot glue 1: Cut out a cardboard ring. 2: Glue 3 magnets onto the ring. Make sure they’re all facing the same direction. 3: Poke a hole in the middle of each magnet and slide a dowel through. 4: Use modeling clay to stick the dowels onto a cardboard base. 5: Use some more clay to stick the 4th magnet to the pen. Make sure this magnet wants to stick to the other magnets. 6: Now give the pen a spin! What’s going on? Magnets have two sides which are different from each other. When a magnet meets another magnet, depending on which sides are facing, they either pull together or push each other apart. The spinning pen is set up so that the pull from the magnets prevents the pen from falling over. The magnet attached to the pen is pulled towards each of the three magnets surrounding it. Those pulls balance out to keep the pen upright, so once you get it moving, it’s free to keep on spinning! (For a while, anyway.) This same principle is used in maglev (magnetic levitation) technology, where magnetic forces are used to reduce friction and make things move! #kiwico, #sciencetricks, #scienceexperiment, #scienceproject, #scienceathome, #scienceforkids, #science, #shorts
