Following a national competition, the ARDS Network was established as a contract program in 1994. The current standard of care for ARDS is the ARDS net protocol. Mechanical ventilation is managed using low tidal volumes and relatively high respiratory rates, with oxygenation managed according to PEEP and FIO2 relationships in the 2000 Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome Network (ARDS Net) trial. The Network's goal is to efficiently test promising agents, devices, or management strategies to improve the care of ARDS patients.
