Website: http://triokoch.com Shop: http://etcetera-records.com Place of recording: Berlin Philharmonic Hall Tradition and innovation: For the Trio Koch – these are Philippe (violin), Laurence (violin) und Jean-Philippe (piano) – musicality runs in the family. The playing of father, daughter and son audibly benefits from their close relationship and fascinates the international audience. Since works for this instrumentation are rare and seldom played, the Trio explores music of all epochs for an original repertoire. For its first CD 3M, Trio Koch has recorded works of the composers Moszkowski, Milhaud und Martinů with the label Etcetera Records. During the second half of the 19th century, Moritz Moszkowski, although being active in almost every musical genre, was to find in numerous piano music editions of domestic music collections. The Suite for two violins and piano in G minor Op. 71 shows his virtuosity in the tradition of romantic pianists such as Chopin or Liszt. However, not only the piano, but also the violin setting is a great technical challenge for every interpreter. The shape of the work is orientated on the baroque genre and combines it with a romantic expression, which ranges from the furious and effectual outer movements via the affecting dance movement through to the sentimental-cantabile Lento. Darius Milhaud composed his Sonata for two violins and piano Op. 15 in 1914, when he was still a student at the Conservatoire in Paris. Thus, the work originated before his later influences such as the music of South America, the Group des Sixes, or jazz, which were highly characteristic for his music. Although the piece is an early work, it is characterized through an amazing maturity and, despite its reference to contemporary Parisian movements such as impressionism, stylistic individuality. In the work of Bohuslav Martinů the piano and, furthermore, the violin occupy an important place in his oeuvre. He composed numerous concertante and chamber music works, which give an example of his excellent mastery of both instruments. Moreover, the Sonatina for two violins and piano shows the numerous musical impressions that he gained up to the point, when he composed the work in Paris in 1930. Besides Martinů‘s engagement with baroque forms, the ›simple‹ piece refers to the Sonatina in G major for violin and piano from his Bohemian compatriot Antonín Dvořák. Additionally, it refers to the simplicity and clarity of the French music of the 1920s and reveals both reminiscences of jazz and the influence of contemporary movements such as the neoclassicism of Igor Stravinsky. Each one of the three interpreters is, besides their engagement for the Koch-Trio, versatilely involved in the musical world: Philippe Koch is the leader of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra, chamber musician in ensembles such as the Trio Grumiaux, Brussels String Quartet, and the Quatuor Louvigny, and, besides, is a professor of violin at Belgian Liège Royal Conservatoire; Laurence Koch graduated with honors at the Liège Royal Conservatoire, has won numerous awards (including the Prix de l’Œuvre des Artistes) and regularly performs as a soloist in orchestras both inside and outside Luxembourg, besides she is particularly interested in chamber music; Jean-Philippe Koch also graduated with honors at the Liège Royal Conservatoire. He was awarded many times for his work (including the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth Prize), and, in 2014, he joined the piano teaching staff at the Luxembourg Conservatoire. Furthermore, he studied jazz-piano at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and has a keen interest in improvisation and composing.
