Bernard Woma and Mike Vercelli - logyille From the Dagara musical tradition, this fascinating music is performed for both for religious rituals and secular celebration and is rarely performed outside of its traditional context in a concert setting. Logyil as is known by the Dagara and Bogyil as it is known by the Birifor people is gender specific in its performance context. Poglu is representative of the female musical repertoire. Bagr-binε is the religious worship music of the Dagara people. The music is played on the logyile, a different type of gyil that is tuned to a minor tetratonic scale. Although Western Christianity and Islam tried to do away with the Bagr religious beliefs and practice, the religion is still alive today and the vibrant music is reminiscent of the African traditional worship. Indeed, Bagr music has a significant influence on the Dagara Catholic Christian Church music of the Dagara, Birifor and Lobi people of northern Ghana and southern Burkina Faso.
