President and CEO, J. Paul Getty Trust Willamette University Class of 1973, History James Cuno has served as president and CEO of the J. Paul Getty Trust since 2011. From 2004 to 2011, he was president and director of the Art Institute of Chicago, and from 2002 to 2004 he was director of and professor at the Courtauld Institute of Art at the University of London. Cuno also has directed the Harvard University Art Museums (1991–2002), the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth College (1989–1991), and the Grunwald Center of the Graphic Arts at the University of California, Los Angeles (1986–1989). He has held teaching positions at Vassar College, UCLA, Dartmouth, and Harvard. Cuno has lectured and written widely on museums and cultural and public policy. Since 2003, he has published Whose Muse? Art Museums and the Public’s Trust, Whose Culture? The Promise of Museums and the Debate Over Antiquities, and Who Owns Antiquity? Museums and the Battle Over Our Ancient Heritage, and most recently Museums Matter: In Praise of the Encyclopedic Museum. Cuno is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, he earned his BA in history from Willamette University in 1973, an MA in art history from the University of Oregon in 1978, and an MA and PhD in fine arts (history of art) from Harvard University in 1981 and 1985, respectively.
