The AT-1, a direct competitor to cameras like the K1000, was a student- and hobbyist-focused camera sold outside of Japan and primarily, if not exclusively, in the U.S. Today, nearly five decades after the A series was first released, the AT-1 remains, in my experience, the most-robust, most-reliable of the Canon A series cameras.
