This is not your regular scenic drive. The Konni to Achankovil forest route is known for its narrow roads, deep potholes, sharp curves, and most importantly, its aggressive wild elephant population. The dense forest on both sides of the road is so thick that you may not even notice an elephant standing just a few meters away until it’s too late. That’s exactly why this route is considered one of the most risky and thrilling forest routes in Kerala. As we cautiously moved deeper into this wild stretch, surrounded by nothing but towering trees and eerie silence, something extraordinary happened… Out of the darkness of the forest emerged a shadow—stealthy, silent, and powerful.We had just sighted one of the rarest wildlife species in Kerala forests—a Black Panther (Melanistic Leopard). A moment that wildlife lovers dream of! The sighting of a black panther in Kerala is extremely rare, especially on a public forest road drive like this.
