October 2023 - Michael Mahoney - Making Sausage: How and why open source scientific software gets made - and what keeps us from making more --- Presentation Abstract: Open science depends on open source software -- tooling that lets users and researchers see what algorithms they're actually using to analyze their data, that let members of the community weigh in on best practices and bug fixes, and that anyone involved in a project can take advantage of, no matter their budget or institutional affiliations. Much of the open source software in use by scientists is also primarily developed by scientists, or more generally by people whose core job responsibilities don't include developing open source tools. This talk will walk through some of the motivations that drive developers to release open source scientific software, and what makes maintaining these tools rewarding, before turning to the institutional and cultural barriers that make it challenging and threaten the long-term sustainability of these projects. Throughout the talk we'll focus primarily on the human dimensions of open source development, how developers, users, and institutions interact with each other, and how we might be able to make open source scientific software more sustainable in years to come. The Open Science Webinar series is a monthly gathering dedicated to building a broad community around open science. The group is organized by the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Open Science Cluster. Learn more: wiki.esipfed.org/Open_Science_Cluster
