For the past couple weeks, the Kenwood NX-800 radio that was on the bus I ride was having issues with transmitting and receiving. For the first few weeks of school, it was working fine. Suddenly, my driver was getting bad reception from a very strong and clear repeater signal, and everyone was having a hard time understanding her. My driver took 2866 back to the shop to have the radio looked at. The mechanic swapped out the antenna on top of the bus, but it did no good. After I recorded the first clip of how the NX-800 sounded and sent it to my bus driver, she took the bus back to the shop. On Tuesday evening, the NX-800 was replaced. The shop rigged an older, bulkier TK-8150 unit into the small mounting bracket and wired it up, along with replacing the microphone. This particular TK-8150 (FleetSync ID 1003159) was removed from bus 1450, a first gen Blue Bird Vision which was totaled a couple weeks ago. Shop was confident this radio worked. I even heard it when it was in 1450, and it sounded great to me. Unfortunately, this didn't solve the problem. The 8150 after a day or so sounded even worse than the NX-800, and you can hear in the second recording I did that the quality was terrible. Chances are there may be yet another new radio in 2866 next week, but I'm guessing the real problem has something to do with the coax cable running to the antenna. I guess that's really all it can be at this point, unless there's some kind of electrical interference with the bus itself. I'll keep you guys updated on this!
