MUWANGA KIVUMBI DETAINED AMID POST-ELECTION VIOLENCE CLAIMS | FULL STORY The Uganda Police Force has confirmed the arrest of Butambala County Member of Parliament Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, who is currently being held in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court. According to police spokesperson Lydia Tumushabe of the Katonga region, Kivumbi’s arrest follows violent clashes that erupted during and after the January 15 general elections. The unrest reportedly involved attempted attacks on a police station and the district vote tally centre in Butambala, leaving at least 10 people dead. However, Kivumbi — a member of the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) — has strongly denied any involvement in the violence. He claims security forces raided his home in Bugoye village, where several members of his campaign team had gathered, and opened fire, killing multiple people. The legislator has described the incident as a “brutal crackdown” on his supporters. In multiple media interviews, Kivumbi accused security forces of using excessive force on civilians who were sheltering at his residence while awaiting election results. Together with his wife, a legal academic, he has called for an independent investigation into the deaths and says they possess video footage backing their claims. The arrest comes amid heightened political tension following comments by President Yoweri Museveni, who accused Kivumbi and other opposition figures of planning coordinated violent attacks in areas where the NUP lost parliamentary seats. The president described some opposition elements as “terrorists” and said intelligence reports pointed to organized post-election violence in districts including Butambala.
