On All Saints’ Day, we remember all those Christians who have died and are with Jesus. It’s a day that reminds us of funeral services we have been to. A lot of our funeral services soften the ugly horror of death. And we too often speak or act in ways that ignore the sadness, suffering, and fear that death brings. As Christians we speak honestly about death as an unnatural aberration to the life that God created and desires for us. Being honest about death does open us up to the sadness, suffering, and fear that comes with death. But we respond to all these things that death brings with faith. We remember a future gathering of believers in Revelation. This gathering is not around a casket, but around our Lord Jesus Christ. Because of Him, death does not have the final say. Jesus has the final say, that of resurrection to eternal life. In that life, sadness, suffering, and fear are gone. In our present lives, when we see the death of saints before us, we see Jesus along with them – He who renews the creation and makes all things new. We are made strong in the face of death, knowing of Christ’s triumph over sin and death. Presented by Pastor Luke Elowsky at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, East Brunswick, NJ.
