Capital Gate is a striking skyscraper in Abu Dhabi, UAE, known for its dramatic lean and impressive engineering. It’s not just a building, but a symbol of architectural innovation in Abu Dhabi, showcasing advanced engineering to pull off such a large lean while ensuring safety and functionality. Leaning Design: The tower leans 18° westwards, which is more than four times the lean of the Leaning Tower of Pisa. This extreme tilt is its most famous feature. World Record: Certified by Guinness in 2010 as the “world’s farthest man-made leaning building. Foundation: The building is supported on 490 piles drilled deeply (20-30 meters) under the ground. These piles vary in diameter, and are anchored by a thick reinforced concrete mat footing. Pre-cambered Core: The central structural core is built with a slight opposite lean (pre-camber) so that over time, as floors are added, the weight and structural forces gradually “pull” it toward vertical. This helps balance the tilt. Diagrid Structure: To support the lean and manage loads (wind, gravity, seismic), both an exterior diagrid (steel façade framework) and internal structural elements connect back to the core. Columns within floors are minimized because the diagrid helps transfer loads.
