●● Echizen City in Fukui Prefecture 福井県・越前市 ●● ** Baikamo of Jisa River 治左川の梅花藻 Jisa River flows through a town of Kamimakara-cho in Echizen City. English name of Baikamo is Japanese Water-crowfoot and it belongs to a plant family of Buttercup. Baikamo is a type of perennial aquatic plant which can only be seen in clean water and they grow in colonies. They bloom flowers similar to plums during summer time between late June and late August. Baikamo only grow in the temperature below 16 degrees. It is very interesting to learn coexistence of Baikamo and Tomiyo in this river. This is a river formed by natural spring water in this area. ** Home of Tomiyo 淡水魚トミヨ Jisa River is also known as a home of Tomiyo. Tomiyo is a freshwater fish belongs to a family of spiderfish. Tomiyo which grows up to 5 to 6 centimeters in length and they can only live in clean water. It is said that Jisa River is the southern most natural habitat of Tomiyo in Japan. Tomiyo has very unique habit in which male fish collect aquatic plants to make a nest to let female fish lay eggs. Once eggs are laid male fish start to protect them by sending fresh water using pectoral fin until they are hatched. Once baby fish start swimming adult fish protect them by keeping baby fish in their mouth to bring them back into the nest. This protective nature of Tomiyo is unique to this species. It is necessary for Tomiyo to have Baikamo to make a nest as well as shrimp called Yokoebi. Perfect environment for the fish is naturally made in this river. ** Well of Jisagawa ふくいのおいしい水 治左川井戸 There is a well of Jisagawa which water is drawn from the same water sauce as Jisa River. The water from the well is recognized as great drinking water of Fukui Prefecture. The place is in an area called Ajimaro located in the east of Takefu.
