Gist Genealogy Road Trip -Gould Hill Farm/Plantation VA. Samuel Gist Plantation - York Gist of the Lewis and Clark Expedition was enslaved here before being emancipated by Samuel Gist. Gould Hill was a farm in Virginia where a white English orphan, Samuel Gist was indentured. But before his indentureship expired his master died Samuel married his master's widow and became instantly wealthy. He later during the American Revolutionary War, returned to England. When he learned his daughter married a slaver and enslaved blacks on Gould Hill Farm he warned her if she did not manumit or emancipate the enslaved "Gist people" he would bequeath her only one shilling. She immediately hired a dream team of lawyers to free the Gist People. The most popular attorney, the lead lawyer was famous for defending Aaron Burr for the murder of Alexander Hamilton and treason. Wickham convinced the Virginia legislators to pass a law for the sole purpose of circumventing their laws which prohibited emancipation of enslaved people. The Gist law allowed Wickham to free the Gist people and transport them to the newly acquired Northwest Territory, Ohio where slavery was prohibited by the founders of the country. Wickham made arrangements to create 6 settlements in different counties in Ohio. There are currently markers at most of The Gist Settlements to commemorate the Settlers, their churches, schools, businesses and homes. You can view footage of the Gist Settlements on this channel.
