In today’s experiment we have one of our volunteers, Tiffany, show us how to make water move by itself against gravity! Water is a polar molecule, meaning that it can use cohesion (attraction between water molecules) and adhesion (attraction between water and a surface) in order to crawl along surfaces like paper towels against gravity. This mechanism is called capillary action, and is used by plants to transport water from the roots up to the leaves. For this experiment you’ll need three short cups, paper towels or cloth, two different colour food dyes (e.g., red and blue), and water. You can skip ahead to 0:39 to jump straight to the experiment!
