This is a Christian chant of the Aramaic speaking Christian communities, the peoples of the Middle-East who speak various Aramaic dialects. Aramaic is a Semitic language and the language Jesus spoke, closely related to Arabic and Hebrew. Aramaic music reflects the geographical location of its origin, with the music being entirely placed in the makamic, modal tradition and its instruments, this song being in Makam Bayat for example. Having had a lot of first hand experience with Middle-Eastern Christians in Montréal as a wedding photographer, I have myself witnessed the tendency for Aramaic chants to be harmonised with Western tonality, something I did here with a vocal chord progression underlying the rest of the makamic melody in Bayat.
