This is more than just a road trip. It’s an overland journey up California’s raw, untamed Lost Coast—where the roads end, the ocean roars, and time slows down. We kicked things off at SeaPal Cove, located down in Noyo Harbor, Fort Bragg, and grabbed what we believe are the best fish and chips in California—hands down. If you’re ever near the Mendocino coast, this spot is a must-stop. 📍 SeaPal Cove Restaurant 32390 N Harbor Dr, Fort Bragg, CA 95437 From there, we followed the winding Eel River, tracing its path through misty canyons and deep redwood valleys. The river became our companion for much of the journey—quiet, powerful, and always nearby—as we made our way into California’s most remote and breathtaking landscapes. We set up camp at Usal Beach, a wild stretch of the Lost Coast where the Pacific crashes with raw power against rugged cliffs and driftwood-strewn shores. Nestled into the forested cliffs and accessed by a rugged trail, Usal is the kind of place you earn. We camped right on the sand, lulled to sleep by the waves. Here, crab snaring became more than a catch—it was a ritual, an intimate dance with nature beneath an endless sky. The sunsets were unforgettable—fiery reds, soft purples, and a silence that speaks louder than any words. Camping under the stars in this untamed landscape reminded us why we seek these escapes—to disconnect from the noise and reconnect. Throughout the trip, our custom Jeep Gladiator overland rig handled it all—tight coastal switchbacks, muddy forest tracks, soft beach sand, and steep grades. Overlanding is more than travel—it’s a lifestyle of vehicle-based adventure built for off-grid camping and backcountry trails that lead to the most remote campsites. With a rig prepped for 4x4 adventure and rugged terrain, every mile is a test of self-reliance, relying on expedition gear, recovery gear, and the comfort of rooftop tent camping. True backroad exploration takes you deep into off-road trails and wilderness travel, where your adventure rig proves itself trail tested. From cross-country overland routes to high mountain passes, through wild terrain and endless dirt road travel, each stop brings campfire nights under the stars. It’s the essence of a long-haul expedition—the spirit of off-grid freedom, the soul of the overland journey, and the reward of authentic backcountry camping. But this wasn’t just a route on a map. It was time reclaimed. Time shared with my wife, Nancy. We’ve been together for 33 years and married for 24. This trip was about getting lost together—on purpose. To reconnect with the wild, and with each other. 🛻 Off-grid camp spots 🌅 Sunsets that silence everything 🦀 Beachside crab snaring 🔥 Campfire meals with a view 🌲 Towering redwoods 🦌 Majestic elk sightings 🏕️ Gold Bluffs beachfront camping 🚙 Custom Jeep Gladiator overland rig ❤️ A connection that only gets stronger 🌊 And the Eel River running alongside us the whole way
