History: The pass was a vital link on the ancient Silk Road, facilitating trade between Leh and Kashgar in Central Asia. It was opened to public motor vehicles in 1988. Strategic Importance: Khardung La is strategically crucial for India as it's used to transport supplies to the Siachen Glacier, which is the world's highest battlefield. Best Time to Visit: The ideal time to visit is during the summer months, from May to September, when the weather is milder, and the roads are typically open and clearer of snow. Road Conditions: The journey to Khardung La involves winding roads, some of which are unpaved with loose rocks and streams from melting snow, especially after South Pullu. The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) maintains the pass and ensures accessibility, but challenging conditions are still possible. Permits: Indian citizens require an Inner Line Permit (ILP) and foreign nationals need a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to visit Khardung La. These can be obtained from the District Commissioner's office in Leh . Altitude Sickness: The high altitude can cause altitude sickness, so it's advisable to spend a few days acclimatizing in Leh before traveling to Khardung La.
