Thermalling in the "blue" just north of Alturas, FL.....spectacular. One of the reasons we come to Florida in March. Using thermals to take an engine-less aircraft on a cross-country flight, staying airborne for 2-3 hours and covering hundreds of miles, is a real challenge on the best soaring days. When there are no clouds to indicate where those thermals are located, the test becomes even more difficult. Often on these "blue" days contest pilots will hunt out rising air in groups (known as gaggles). In large gaggles it can be very difficult to achieve an acceptable climb rate. Although striking out alone is more risky it can have some significant benefits if a good thermal is found. This video records one such climb starting at 2,700 feet and topping out at 5,100 feet in just under 4 minutes (a genuine 600 feet per minute average).
