Back in a sunny England, I’m enjoying a nostalgic reunion with my 1990s BMW F650. Reflecting on an overland trip, 25 years ago, that took me from England to Kathmandu and on to Kuala Lumpur, I consider modern, so-called, adventure bikes, and how the little BMW compares for a real-world adventure, and explain how the F650 was chosen for its practicality, affordability, manoeuvrability, lightness, and reliability. In the video, I discuss the advantages of choosing such a motorcycle for adventure travel rather than the overpriced, overweight, and over-specced “adventure bikes” perpetuated by the industry and internet culture. I also explain the most important lesson I learned on the trip.
