Ethnomusicologist Nicoletta Demetriou writes: "The title is revealing: in the Greek Cypriot tradition, ‘Sikoses’ (a Cypriot term) mark the last day of feasting and meat consumption before the period of Lent begins. Significantly, Sikoses also mark the period of carnival, when people are allowed – even encouraged – to put masks on. The eponymous song, a traditional melody with new lyrics by Antonis Antoniou, is equally revealing: ‘The carnival days have come and gone, and the masks have fallen off, and the rich have ended up with empty purses… Those who ate, that’s it, from now on they’ll be kissing the ground.’ The allegory chosen by Monsieur Doumani – the passage from the excesses of the previous period to sobriety and contemplation, and from disguising to revealing one’s true face – is telling." -------------------------------------------------------------- ΣΤΙΧΟΙ Τζ’ επήασιν οι Σήκωσες τζ’ εππέσασιν οι μάσκες Τζ’ εμείνασιν οι άρκοντες με όφκαιρες παλάσκες Ετρώασιν τζ’ επίννασιν τζαι εχασκογελούσαν Τζει πά’ που ’ταν οι μούττες τους (ε)λικόπτερα ’χτυπούσαν Κόλακες τζαι βρυκόλακες μέραν ’συνωμοτούσαν Τζαι που την νύχταν ως αυκήν γαίμαν βραστόν ’ρουφούσαν Τζ’ επήασιν οι Σήκωσες τζ’ εν θεννά ξαναρτούσιν Από ’φαν έφαν, που τωρά χαμαί θα προσκυνούσιν -------------------------------- Lyrics Translation The carnival days have come and gone, and the masks have fallen off, and the rich have ended up with empty purses They ate and drank, then laughed themselves silly And helicopters crashed on their turned-up noses Arse-kissers and zombies would scheme all day And drink hot blood from sundown to dawn The carnival days have come and gone, and they will never return Those who ate, that’s it, from now on they’ll be kissing the ground .
