Monologue 60 in the 1,000 Monologues Challenge is from the play Camera Obscura by Emmet L.F. Cameron. Emmet L.F. Cameron is a rural queer playwright with roots on both sides of the Canada/USA border. They are grateful to the Dramatists Guild & the Kitchen Theatre Project for the development of Camera Obscura, which is currently seeking a world premiere. To learn more about Emmet and their work, visit www.emmet.ca. Camera Obscura is a play about assumptions, judgement, fear, authenticity, and how our perception of others is blurred through the lens of our own experiences. Every character has turning points and this monologue is one of Beata's. In this moment, Beata is celebrating her one-year wedding anniversary on the night of a solar eclipse. She has thrown a party, but nearly every guest has canceled, leaving an intimate and uncomfortable gathering with her husband Nate, his high school friend Davy, and Davy’s partner Rachel. Beata is pregnant and excited about the future she believes she's building. Just before this monologue, Nate confesses that he is a closeted gay man and proposes that they maintain the marriage as it is. This moment is not about Nate being gay. It is about betrayal and consent. Beata realizes that Nate married her without telling her the truth about who he was, and now wants her to continue playing the roles of wife and mother symbolically while being denied desire and authenticity. She is discovering that the life she chose was never truly real, and that she was never given the chance to choose with all the facts. Emmet’s style is so natural, unforced, and full of life under the words. I loved taking on this stunning moment in the play and appreciate them for reaching out.
