In this video, Dr. Sarbani Ghosh, senior consultant at Shekar Eye Hospital, talks about Trachoma. Trachoma is an infectious eye disease that is a leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. Trachoma is an infection caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. Trachoma is contagious, spreading through contact with the eyes, eyelids, nose, or throat secretions of infected people. It can also be passed on by handling infected items, such as handkerchiefs. In developing countries, eye-seeking flies are responsible for disease transmission. The risk factors for this disease are overcrowding, poor sanitation conditions, inadequate access to water, a lack of hygiene, flies, and insects. Symptoms can vary from very mild ones like itching, discharge, little to severe pain, redness, and eyelid swelling to more advanced ones like decreased vision leading to blindness.
