Life after cancer surgery to the upper jaw.

Let me introduce my dear patient, Mrs. Ola Sawitsky. Mrs. Sawitsky underwent maxillectomy surgery for cancer of the hard palate. She had the left side of her hard palate and oll of the teeth on the left side of her upper jaw removed making a communication between her mouth and her nose. That means that every time she tries to speak she sounds like she's muffled. Every time she tries to eat everything comes out her left nostril. What I did for her was I made her a surgical obturator which closes the defect immediately at the time of surgery. I also replaced all of her teeth removed with the tumor back in her mouth at the time of surgery. When Mrs. Sawitsky awoke from surgery she was able to speak and swallow as though nothing had had occurred. In her own words, Mrs. Switzky will now tell you about her journey and how she has come from prior to surgery, receiving the diagnosis of cancer, being terrified that she would never again be able to live her life as a functioning participating member of society, to post surgery, where she awoke speaking and eating right away. Mrs. Sawitsky is now out having a wonderful time with her friends and family since the day she came home from the hospital.
