With vibrant toppings arranged over lightly seasoned sushi rice, it brings both beauty and balance to the table. In this video, we share an easy and approachable way to make chirashi sushi at home, no rolling or shaping required. This simple style lets each ingredient shine. Fresh salmon, shrimp, cucumber, delicate kinshi tamago, and decorative carrots create a bright and festive dish that looks impressive yet is surprisingly easy to prepare. Whether for a special occasion or a relaxed meal with family and friends, chirashi sushi is a wonderful way to enjoy Japanese flavors at home. Chirashi Sushi Recipe (Serves 2) Ingredients: For the sushi rice: ・14 oz (400 g) warm cooked rice ・3 Tbsp rice vinegar ・1 1/2 Tbsp sugar ・1 tsp salt For the toppings: ・3.5 oz (100 g) salmon (raw or smoked), diced ・3 boiled shrimp, cut in half ・1/2 cucumber, diced ・2 eggs (for kinshi tamago) ・Ikura (salmon roe), optional ・Shredded nori, optional For decorative carrots: ・1/2 carrot ・6.8 fl oz (200 ml) dashi ・1 Tbsp sake ・1 Tbsp sugar Instructions 1. Make the sushi rice by combining vinegar, sugar, and salt to make sushi vinegar. Pour it evenly over the warm rice. Using a rice paddle, mix with a slicing motion while fanning the rice to cool it. 2. To make the kinshi tamago, start by cracking the eggs into a bowl, adding a pinch of salt, and beating well. Cook the egg mixture into a thin crepe in a lightly oiled pan. Once cooled, slice it into thin strips. 3. Dice the salmon. Cut the boiled shrimp in half lengthwise. Dice the cucumber. Prepare the decorative carrots following the instructions below. 4. Transfer the sushi rice to a serving dish and smooth the surface to create an even base for the toppings. 5. Arrange the toppings by spreading the kinshi tamago over the rice first, then arrange salmon, shrimp, cucumber, and other toppings in a colorful pattern. 6. Top with shredded nori and ikura if desired. Serve directly at the table and enjoy. Decorative Carrots 1. Slice the carrot into 4 mm (about 1/8 in) rounds and cut out plum blossom shapes using a cutter. 2. Create the petal details by making shallow cuts about halfway through the carrot from between each petal toward the center. From the middle of each petal, cut diagonally toward the slit made in the previous step. 3. Combine dashi, sugar, and sake in a small saucepan. Add the carrots and simmer until tender.
