Born Hans-Georg Kern on January 23, 1938 in Deutschbaselitz, Germany, Baselitz was named after his hometown in 1961. Willem de Kooning was his inspiration from a traveling exhibition of American Abstract Expressionists he saw when he is a student. His work also features the influence of Philip Guston and Jackson Pollock. He lives and works in Salzburg, Austria.
