Created by Dimitris Tsaganos - Artist: Tom Waits - "Somewhere" is one of the most representative songs of everlasting love...the love that is beyond time and space...even beyond death... To my opinion, the outstanding rendition and interpretation of Tom Waits, with his distinctive voice and passion, makes the song even more emotionally stirring. "Somewhere" is a song written for the 1957 Broadway musical "West Side Story" that was made into a film in 1961. The music, written by Leonard Bernstein and the lyrics by Stephen Sondheim takes a phrase from the slow movement of Beethoven's "Emperor" Piano Concerto, which forms the start of the melody, and also a longer phrase from the main theme of Pyotr Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake". In the stage musical, the song appears in the second act during the Somewhere Ballet. At the end of the show, when Tony is shot, Maria sings the first few lines of the song as he dies in her arms. In the film, the song occurs after Tony has stabbed Maria's brother. Having nowhere else to go, Tony runs to Maria, who has just been told of her brother's death. In spite of her anger, she still loves Tony and begs him to hold her. After Maria cries out "It's not us...it's everything around us", Tony replies "Then I'll take you away, where nothing can get to us" and begins singing "Somewhere" to her. His comforting voice draws her in and it becomes a duet of hope that their love will survive "Somehow, Someday, Somewhere". As in the stage show, at the end Maria sings the first few lines of the song, as Tony dies in her arms. _________________________________________________ "Somewhere" There's a place for us Somewhere a place for us Peace and quiet and open air Wait for us Somewhere There's a time for us Someday a time for us Time together with time to spare Time to learn Time to care Someday, somewhere We'll find a new way of living We'll find a way of forgiving Somewhere There's a place for us A time and a place for us Hold my hand and we're half way there Hold my hand And I'll take you there Somehow Someday, somewhere...
