20th February 2026 marks another landmark anniversary to celebrate in the world of fighting games as Soul Edge, yes, Soul Edge (eat your heart out Edge Games) celebrates 30 years - the legend will never die! To be blunt, Soul Edge is what Battle Arena Toshinden should have been: A tightly put together 3D fighter where the visual design is cool and consistent, where combat feels weighty, and where mind games seize the day. I am somewhat blinded by nostalgia but Soul Edge is like most of Namco's output from this era, where the outstanding production qualities help put together something that feels nothing short of iconic. Even sound effects have a personality to them that doesn't generate enough praise, especially in an age of homogenous Unreal Engine orientated slop. Go from this to Soul Calibur 6 and try to convince me otherwise. I dare you. Anyway, because this is an early 3D fighter, Soul Edge does suffer in it's fluidity at times, with the 30FPS limit feeling harsh to play with. Also, despite being a 3D fighter, with ring-outs and distracting stage decorations, the orientation of battle is largely fixed to a 2D plane, barring some odd side-step mechanics here or there (a la Tekken 3). Both of these would be remedied when Soul Calibur eventually released in arcades and Dreamcast some years later. What does continue to excel however is the sheer content on offer in Soul Edge: Three costumes for each character, Fully voiced and animated endings, complete with alternating routes, an adventure mode with unlockable weapons, each with their own stats and strengths, and TWO arranged soundtracks with their own interpretations of Soul Edge's atmosphere. If this game was released in 2026, these features would be nickled and dimed like crazy by Bamco! This playthrough series was originally recorded as just another stress test for my weird and wonderful GBS-Control/Open Source Scan Converter combo setup. I opted for 1920x1080 on the GBS-Control side here, and passed the analogue video through VGA to the OSSC for it's own ADC work when sending out the HDMI video to an external capture card. It looks good, if a touch soft compared to my RetroTink 4K, but has desync and screen-tearing issues that aren't anywhere near as bad when played at 480pX2 instead. These videos will feature the "Good" endings for each character in the game, I may eventually go back and show the "Bad" outcomes, and maybe the Edge Master adventure mode as well for that matter, depending on the sort of reaction I get with these videos. ------------------------------------------------ A NECESSARY EVIL: -------------------------------------------------- Any copyrighted footage I use is covered under fair use laws, or more specifically those listed under Section 30(1) of the UK Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1989 and under section 107 of US Copyright Act 1976.
