PAL vs NTSC comparison of Daytona USA on Sega Saturn and why you shouldn't buy the PAL version

Randomised Gaming takes an in depth look at PAL 50Hz and NTSC 60Hz release of Daytona USA and the verdict is shocking. This video showcases what happens when PAL optimisation goes wrong, as we run side by side split screen comparison tests to look at the numerous changes made to the PAL version by Sega to try and get the game to run at speeds closer to the NTSC version. Random Gamer Riven, provides a short commentary explanation of the game and as always, it is done in a friendly professional manner with no swearing. If you enjoy this video please do like it and subscribe to the channel and let us know if you want to see more videos like this. This video has taken far longer than planned, sadly this was supposed to be 4K, but the editor we used couldn't export correctly, as it appears the 4K support is still a work in progress. This video would have gone up the day before if it had exported correctly. Summary notes from Riven, I didn't describe milliseconds quite as well as I should have, 1000 milliseconds = 1 second, but Daytona USA only shows the first two digits and not the third, the count up also starts at 000. The count is tied to the framerate. To demo the count system used in game here's an example of how each version counts in milliseconds: NTSC/J: 000,050,100,150,200,250,300 PAL: 000,060,120,180,240,300,360 As I discuss in the video the PAL version is incorrectly using whole numbers for its count as AM2 rounded up incorrectly when it should have gone on 058 values and rounded up when it completed a full second, like so: PAL/CORRECTED: 000,058,116,174,232, 290,348 The stop watch video is from MAURO - PT BR YouTube Channel:    • Cronômetro com milissegundos, 5 minutos - ...   Used under the creative commons license given in the video. The box artwork scans came from: https://segaretro.org/ Goes without saying Daytona USA is copyright of Sega. The real time stopwatch should be used as a guide only as we weren't able to perfectly match it to the frames used in-game. Which is itself evidence of a possible issue. Not sure how the game calculates the laps times directly as they do show different times to the count. Perhaps the game is working in the background at 60fps, even when frames don't move? In the GAME OVER jingle the vocals of the singer should be in time with each letter as they appear on screen. Technically the music is running correct at real time as it's CD based audio, it's just the game is running to fast for it, so cuts off the audio early when run at 60Hz. Due to a bug in the editor, the last split screen comparison is missing the version tag, it got incorrect moved to after that video has played. So left is the PAL 60Hz footage and right is NTSC 60Hz. We didn't record any raw 50Hz footage of the NTSC version, but that would have run at a speed much slower than the optimised PAL version at 50Hz, it would have been the standard 17.5% slower. Also ignore the slight colour changes in the video that's due to our Saturn RGB Scart not playing ball on the NTSC race, the only reason we didn't record the video was due to the time being so close. In summary the PAL version of Daytona USA is badly optimised for 50Hz and fails to correctly match the NTSC version, avoid buying it unless you have no other option. There are no doubt areas we didn't cover or missed, but the evidence present in the video should be more than enough for our viewers to make up their own mind. [Edit: Correction, Riven made a mistake on the music, Daytona USA use CD digital audio tracks, so the music is always running in real time in both 50Hz and 60Hz. It isn't sped up or slowed down, this would only apply if the audio was synthesised by the console, which is true of many games, just not Daytona USA. However as the PAL version runs too fast at 60Hz the music is cut off as a result. There will be a note on this in the next Hz video] Also known as: デイトナ USA (Japan) Sega Racing Classic Release: 1995 Developer: SEGA AM2 / セガエイエムツー Publisher: SEGA / セガ Format: Sega Saturn (SS) / セガサターン Daytona USA the arcade game is also available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 there was also a Japanese only PC Windows release in 1996, but this is unlikely to work on modern systems without using mods and other programs. There are many other releases of Daytona USA as well with extra stages and other feature such as Daytona USA 2001 and Daytona USA: Championship Circuit Edition, but these aren't direct ports of the game.
