Returning from a week in Wales, we found the plums had put on a lot of weight due to sunshine and much needed rain. Most are looking good, but despite our thinning, a heavy weight of plums had broken this branch. This might have been prevented by heavier thinning or some kind of support. Acute upright main branches like this are more likely to snap in this way, when dpoing the initial 'scaffolding' shape training of the tree, try to achieve angles more horizontal. This acure upright angled branch had become wekened by water lodging ion the crck and presumably some microbial action, weakening it so it broke. Now just imagine the problems we'd have had if we had not done ANY fruit thinning!
