When Noelle Gatlin first experienced what seemed like gastric reflux, she could never have imagined it was the beginning of a life-changing diagnosis: Stage II pancreatic cancer. What followed was a long, complex medical journey involving multiple hospital visits, life-saving procedures, and months of chemotherapy. This is Noelle’s inspiring story—a story of determination, expert medical care, and ultimate recovery. How It Began: A Misleading Symptom In July 2022, Noelle began to feel unwell. Initially diagnosed with gastric reflux at an urgent care clinic, her symptoms worsened. Her stomach became painfully distended, and her husband urged her to go to the emergency room. There, a CT scan revealed a mass near her pancreas—setting off a chain of events that would ultimately save her life. Diagnosis & Immediate Interventions After her transfer to a hospital and additional testing, including a second CT scan and endoscopy, doctors confirmed the diagnosis: Stage II pancreatic cancer. Noelle was immediately treated to relieve her most urgent symptoms. A nasogastric (NG) tube was inserted to decompress her stomach, providing immediate relief. Her care team then placed a duodenal stent to bypass the area of her small intestine obstructed by the tumor, followed by a bile duct stent to relieve pressure from her liver and gallbladder. These early interventions were critical in stabilizing her condition before she could proceed to curative treatments. Aggressive Chemotherapy with FOLFIRINOX Before surgery could be considered, Noelle underwent an intense 12-infusion chemotherapy regimen with FOLFIRINOX—a powerful combination often used for treating advanced pancreatic cancer. This included drugs such as irinotecan, which can lead to side effects like neuropathy and severe nausea. To help manage these side effects, medications like Aloxi were used to reduce nausea and vomiting. Despite the difficulties, Noelle stayed strong—physically and emotionally—throughout her treatment. A Major Surgical Milestone: The Whipple Procedure After completing chemotherapy, Noelle was ready for a Whipple procedure, also known as a pancreatic duodenectomy. This complex surgery involved the removal of: Her gallbladder The upper 20% of her pancreas The first part of her small intestine (duodenum) Thanks to the skill of her surgical team and Noelle’s pre-treatment conditioning, the operation was a success. Recovery & Return to Life Noelle’s recovery was remarkable. As a special education teacher in Riverton, Utah, she was eager to return to the classroom. Because she followed all post-operative guidance and maintained an active lifestyle before, during, and after treatment, Noelle believes she is now healthier than she was even before her diagnosis. Her journey also included challenges unrelated to cancer, such as managing a deviated septum, but her resilience never wavered.
