"TrashIn' the Big Apple" addresses the environmental impact of landfilling food waste using New York City as a case study. New Yorkers waste more than any city in America, but there's been no major policy, movement or plan to remedy the damage to the earth and its citizens. Until now. This video was made in 2005 (the original 15-minute version will soon be made available), and is finally having an impact, with Mayor Bloomberg proposing in 2013 a city-wide mandatory composting plan. The above short documentary spotlights sanitation authorities and city businesses, demonstrates steps for solutions at home, and even tours the Rikers Island Prison composting facilities, offering solutions for both large scale operations and individuals alike. Through interviews with key figures, animation, and featuring a dynamic narrator, the 8-minute film takes the viewer on a short but comprehensive ride through the mounting problem of food waste. With 'Garbageland' author Elizabeth Royte and former NYC Composting Director Tom Outerbridge.
