AFIRE & NYCEDC 2025 Invest NYC Summit

As part of AFIRE’s recent 2025 Annual Member Meeting, AFIRE partnered with the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) on the first-ever AFIRE/NYCEDC Invest NYC Summit, which gathered real estate leaders from around the world to explore opportunities in New York as a gateway to expanding US investment. Featuring civic, business, and investment leaders across a host of unique New York venues, the Summit offered AFIRE members and guests a compelling look at the numerous initiatives New York City has taken to attract property market investment in the post-COVID era, with “much of it driven by the Economic Development Corporation,” says NYCEDC President & CEO Andrew Kimball. The morning featured talks from numerous city officials, a ferry tour featuring some of the EDC’s successful developments, and a panel discussion on Roosevelt Island, led by AFIRE CEO Gunnar Branson. Deputy Mayor for Housing, Economic Development and Workforce Adolfo Carrión Jr. pointed to major investments in housing affordability, life sciences, infrastructure, and transportation. “You’re going to see some very important investments that the Adams administration has made,” he said. “We are inviting the world to come and invest in New York City.” For NYC Mayor Eric Adams, investment comes down to trust. “You want to make sure your investment is going to be protected,” he said, pointing to the city’s “3Ps”: people, public safety, and partnership. “We are the safest big city in America,” Adams added. “The smart bet is here in New York City . . . Not only in some amazing projects, but, amazing people.” The panel discussion focused on the City of Yes for Economic Opportunity, a city-wide rule modifier made to support growing industries and help commercial corridors thrive. “We call ourselves a little bit of the Swiss Army knife of economic development at EDC,” said Cecilia Kushner, the organization’s chief strategy officer. When it comes to housing, Chair of the New York City Planning Commission Daniel Garodnick said, “we believe that this entire proposal is going to help us turn the tide on our housing crisis.” Melissa Román Burch, Chief Operating Officer of NYCEDC (and guest speaker for the AFIRE Annual Meeting), said the city’s role is often to tip the balance for hesitant investors. “Our incentives could be catalytic in going from ‘I’m not so sure if this is the right moment or the right time,’ to ‘Yes, this is the bet that I want to place and put this project into motion.’” And to round out the day, AFIRE’s Gunnar Branson ended with a message of opportunity and unity for global investors, crediting the NYCEDC team for “creating this amazing experience and for all the work and all the conversations we’ve been having for over a year now in terms of how to connect our worlds better.” 00:00 Andrew Kimball 00:31 Gunnar Branson 00:42 Adolfo Carrión Jr. 01:22 Aissata M.B.
