Frequency Illusions Presents: Los Yesterdays: Live at Moe's Alley. I had the privilege of spending a weekend with Los Yesterdays as they brought their soulful sound to the Bay Area, catching up with them in Berkeley and following their journey to Santa Cruz. Anchored by the vision and artistry of Gabriel Rowland and Victor Benavides, the band’s current lineup—touring with The Slackers—is a seamless blend of talent that complements the duo’s vision. Their debut album, Frozen In Time, released earlier this year, is a masterclass in crafting heartbreak into something sonically healing. It’s an album that hits deeply and lingers, taking up residence in the soul. Listening to this record for the first time, my friends and I all had the same thought: “This sounds like home.” To me, it echoes the Mission District; to Will, it feels like San Mateo; and to Joanna, it’s “summertime in LA.” The album is a love letter to California, polished with exceptional production that makes it feel timeless—like it’s always been part of your playlist. And while Frozen In Time is an achievement in itself, one song stood out above all for me this year—"Love is a Game for Fools." This track wasn’t just music; it became an anthem, its soul-drenched chords and aching vocals accompanying my hardest and best days. It reminded me that even in heartbreak, there’s beauty, and even in longing, there’s purpose. Victor reflected on the band’s origins: “We didn’t set out to ‘be a Chicano band’ when we started back in 2016. We just wanted to make the music we grew up with, the music that made us feel alive. When I put on those shades and the hair goes up, I become Bad Vic—and that’s a space where I can process everything. I hope our audience feels the same catharsis.” The energy Los Yesterdays brings to the stage is magnetic, turning audiences into passionate fans. Their art captures the essence of togetherness—perfect for cruising with someone special or your crew.
