A city walk| Let's go to Fryslân: Leeuwarden-Ljouwert (Friesland)

#travelvlog #trainjourney #leeuwarden #moderndaybreakfastclub A city walk| Let's go to Fryslân: Leeuwarden-Ljouwert (my dad's place) Arriving by train in Leeuwarden, the capitol of the province Fryslân (Friesland). The province with its own registered and accepted language. So a dual-language province like Wales. It is taught in schools - some use it as their first language. I can understand it when spoken clearly and slowly. There are dialects and there are languages. Frisian is a language. Leeuwarden/Ljouwert is the capitol and main city. It is the birthplace of my father, my teenage years of residence and final resting place of many relatives including my younger brother. It has a special place in my heart. Not for all the history, it sure has bucket loads of that, but the more personal stories. I hope you enjoy my city walk. Thanks to the many Wikipedia pages and websites for the added information. A day to never forget. Read on if you'd like more information. Leeuwarden station was put into use on October 27, 1863 with the opening of the Harlingen – Leeuwarden railway line. 1× per hour express Intercity service Rotterdam - Utrecht - Amersfoort - Zwolle - Leeuwarden Building: Leeuwarden station is one of the standard stations of the State Railways, built in the 1860s and one of 9 built in this style. The building was designed by the engineer Karel Hendrik van Brederode Leeuwarden station was later thoroughly renovated. In 1890 a new square extension was built on the east side, the side wings were renovated in 1924. More drastic was the renovation of the middle section in 1904. A high new hall with a large semi-circular window was built on the site of the original building. The station was also renovated and modernized in 2000. In 2013, the platforms were made accessible by lift. In 2016 it turned out that the cast iron construction of the platform roofs had been seriously neglected. These could pose a hazard in the event of a storm, which is why they were removed. ProRail wanted to install completely new roofs, but the municipality of Leeuwarden insisted on restoration. Ultimately, ProRail opted for renovation of all the station's roofs. On the platform there are two wooden kiosks with panels and simple neo-Renaissance shapes. Statue: LOVE https://keunstwurk.nl/art/love/ The LOVE fountain is seven meters high and consists of two white heads of a boy and a girl resting on an oval-shaped black plateau. Their faces are turned towards each other but their eyes are closed. Both facial expressions are serene, almost meditative. “They dream,” says Plensa. “For children, the future is a dream full of promises.” Plensa got his inspiration for the mist fountain when he saw the mist above the Frisian fields early in the morning. “In Friesland,” he said, “the water comes from the ground.” A two-metre high cloud of mist hangs around the children's heads in which the visitor can wander around. FBTO In the 1950s, a number of Frisian farmers and gardeners decided to jointly share the risks of, for example, fire. To this end, the Friese Boeren en Tuinders Onderlinge (FBTO) was founded in 1956. Palace of Justice Leeuwarden is a courthouse in Leeuwarden. The neoclassical building from 1851 was designed by Thomas Adrianus Romein. The facade has a Corinthian colonnade and a pediment containing the national coat of arms. St Bonifatius Church The church was built between 1882 and 1884. It is a large three-aisled cross basilica in neo-Gothic style. The church tower is topped by a high wooden spire. On January 3, 1976, the spire broke off during a very heavy storm. In 1979-1980 it was rebuilt according to the original design. The Centraal Apotheek is a pharmacy in a monumental building in Leeuwarden in the Dutch province of Friesland. It was built in 1904-1905, designed by G.B.
