Let's Play: Metroid Other M (Longplay)

Metroid feels like one of those spotty franchises Nintendo owns that is pretty notable, but rarely seen. It sure felt like it for the past seven years following the release of, this game. But with E3 wrapped up leaving us followers of Nintendo with a giddy feeling created by Prime 4 and Samus Returns, I decided to step back and recollect on where the Metroid franchise seemed to hit its low, at a game that I... honestly don't mind. Metroid: Other M receives pretty mixed reviews, rightly so in some cases. Issues with the gameplay are generally spot on. Implementation of first person mode to try and keep Prime fans entertained was a flop. You can't use anything but missiles generally. Sure you can use beams, but you can't look around using the B button, because the B button is also how you lock and use missiles. Great programming. Furthermore though, what's the point of looking around if you can't move. First person was a flop. They were going in a new direction with their third person perspective, so they should have stayed in that direction and left 1st person behind. The feel of linearity isn't the most thrilling, but doesn't feel that bad. I among many people still get irritated because I can't backtrack in this game due to doors randomly locking, but whatever. People like Prime 3 and that was a pretty linear game. At first anyway. The ruining of Samus's character is something I like to skim past. I get trying to give iron-shell Samus Aran a little humanity, but making her the "ideal Japanese woman" is everything Samus Aran stands against. Having Samus constantly beg or bow to the whim of other men in this game is so not the character of Samus. Even her body is awkward. Her face isn't as stony/chalky as it was in the previous games, but her reverse amphora frame where she has the slim body, yet giant mom hips is so awkward. As for upgrades, I'm only disappointed that they could't think of a reason stupider than an explosion or "getting mugged". Or by just not randomly having them in the first place. So creatures in this game drop powerups. For that matter all upgrades could have been that way. Meh. But the biggest points of criticism by far lie in the story. Yes the script is bad, yes they could have gotten Microsoft Mary to voice Samus and there wouldn't be any difference from the final product, and yes this game makes Samus look really bad compared to her previous public images, but in the end, I don't care. Why? This is a video game, not a movie. You don't watch a movie for how fun it is to play it. Likewise you don't play a video game for how interesting the story is. That what movies are for. Or fanfiction if you're dauntless enough. Story is still a big part of a video game. But you shouldn't really hate a video game if the story's bad, because the story isn't the focus of a video game. The gameplay and how much fun you have playing is. By all means the game is even better when you complete it so you can skip past the cutscenes. And yeah, I get that this story was supposed to be the game where "the story of Samus can now be told". That's even on the box art. But no matter how story heavy the game is, at the end of the day it's still a video game, a scenario where how much fun you have playing is all that matters in the end. Unless its a game like Asagao Academy where all you do is click through the game and make decisions, where the dialogue actually matters because that IS the gameplay. This isn't the case with Metroid: Other M. But if you still hate Other M as a game, where the D-Pad controls and the 1st vs 3rd person conflict and the apparent repetitiveness get to you, well, that's you. As for me, this game as a video game is not that bad. Referring to the box art again, it does seem like the most action packed Metroid game so far. Team Ninja didn't do that bad of a job putting together this action game. Sakamoto should never have a Fanfiction.net or archiveofourown account. He published one big fanfiction sample to the world and it nearly ruined one of gaming's greatest female protagonist. Nearly every review ever that you'll find about this game aside from minor nitpicks about gameplay (erm, 1st person) will bash the story. Because every person ever plays a video game for how interesting the story is apparently. All in all, I find Metroid: Other M the video game compared to the movie isn't that bad of an experience contrary to popular belief. But believe what you want to believe.
